Call for Papers - Black Hat Abu Dhabi 2010 Posted by cdupuis on Thursday, 15 July 2010 @ 15:41:28 EDT (419 reads) Topic Black Hat
WHERE and WHEN: Launched under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Black Hat Abu Dhabi will take place on 8th to 11th November 2010 at Emirates Palace.
Black Hat has partnered with the UAE Telecoms Regulatory Authority to hold a three track, two day Briefings in Abu Dhabi, the Middle East's first edition of the Las Vegas-based security summit. WHAT:
The Call for Papers is now open at: https://cfp.blackhat.com/ Current number of speaking slots and the topics for them are: 2 talks on Physical Security 3 talks on Forensics 5 talks on Infrastructure 5 talks on Web Application Security 2 talks on Root Kits 3 talks on Hardware Hacking 2 talks on Cyber War and Legal Issues 3 talks on Cloud Security 2 talks on Attack Techniques 3 talks on Reverse Engineering It should be a great time, we are trying to work out some cool things for the speakers to do. We have a lot of interest, from the top on down as you can see by the organizations supporting our first conference in the GCC countries.
We will go in with a full Black Hat experience, with all the tech and none of the vendor fluff. Let's see if the UAE market can handle it! Black Hat Abu Dhabi will offer a full range of sessions, including ten training classes running on 8th and 9th November, followed by three briefing tracks running simultaneously on 10th and 11th alongside the exhibition. We are going to make early selections of about a third is the session in the next couple weeks so we have something to market with. Interested? Submit! Jeff Moss

Time is running out to register at the late rate of €1295, so please consider signing up promptly if you have plans to attend. The onsite price that applies after April 1 is considerably higher. This applies to Training sessions as well as the Briefings portion of the event. https://commerce.blackhat.com/selection/bh_europe_2009 If you’re planning to attend Black Hat Europe, you can begin mapping out the presentations you want to see by visiting our Briefings Schedule page at: https://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-europe-09/bh-eu-09-schedule.html. - - All Your Packets Are Belong to Us - Attacking Backbone Technologies by Enno Rey and Daniel Mende. Enno previewed this presentation at our last webcast, and it is a truly fascinating and sobering look at threats to the carrier space. https://media.blackhat.com/webinars/black-hat-webcast-9-march-2009-eupreview.m4b - - Stripping SSL To Defeat HTTPS In Practice by Moxie Marlinspike. This is an expansion and update to the presentation that Moxie gave at Black Hat DC, where it got possibly the most press of any talk at the event. https://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-dc-09/bh-dc-09-archives.html#Marlinspike https://media.blackhat.com/bh-dc-09/blackhat-dc-09-marlinspike-interview.m4v - - Fun and Games Using In-Memory Execution on Mac OS X by Charlie Miller and Vincenzo Iozzo. This presentation also had a very promising preview on our last webcast. https://media.blackhat.com/webinars/black-hat-webcast-9-march-2009-eupreview.m4b BLACK HAT USA 2009 July 25-30 isn’t as far away as it might sound. We’re returning to Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip, and this year we’ve got a lot more space to work with. We’re well into our preparations to bring you a great conference. All your favorite events will be back, as well as some new surprises! https://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-registration/bh-registration-usa-09.html USA 2009 CALL FOR PAPERS: We’re still accepting proposals for Black Hat USA 2009 until May 1, 2009. If you’ve got something you want the security world to hear, submit it at https://cfp.blackhat.com/ Early selection begin May 1st, with the selection process done June 1. If you like the idea of helping to set the agenda for Black Hat, it’s also a good time to get registered and begin helping us rate and review our presentations. Paid delegates have access to information about all submitted presentations. The ratings and reviews we get from you help us to create the Briefings lineup. This year the CFP system gets some usability updates to better navigate the hundreds of submissions the USA conference gets. Space: Caesars has added (another!) conference expansion for this year and Black Hat will be taking advantage of it. The expanded space means quite a few things - less traffic congestion in the hallways, for starters. What we’re really excited about, though, is the fact that we’ll have a meet and greet room for each track. This means that after each presentation you’ll be able to follow the speaker(s) into a designated Q&A session and spend some time in a quieter, more personal setting with the speaker and other audience members. This has worked successfully for Black Hat at the smaller conferences and now we are going to try it on a much larger scale at the USA event. FACEBOOK – we’re trying out a Facebook fan page. If you’re a Facebook user, we’d love to have you join and use it as a place to communicate and share with us. Side_Winder BlackHat Report Posted by boss on Monday, 05 March 2007 @ 08:16:16 EST (6027 reads) Topic Black Hat
cdupuis writes " First I must say much thanks to Black Hat for helping to sponsor CCCure and to Clement for allowing me to represent CCCure at the Black Hat DC 2007, I was one of the lucky three Clement mentioned and this is my report on the event.
This was the third time that Black Hat visited the Washington, DC area, in the past they were more geared toward the Federal Government, but with the changing landscape of the area, it was much broader.
While not as grand as some of the other Black Hat conferences, this one showed promise. It had been a few years since they last were in the Washington DC area mainly due to scheduling and not being familiar with the area, but the hope to make this an annual event.
Actually it was held in Crystal City which is in Arlington, Virginia and is just across the river from DC. They held two basic tracts for the briefings each day. Day One focused on “Hardware and Below the OS” and “Forensics and Incident Response”. Day Two focused on “Affecting the Enterprise and “Software Security and Binary Analysis”.
There was close to 300 attendees and 7 vendors. The vast majority of attendees probably 92% were male. I’d guess the majority of the attendees were in their late 20’s – early 40’s.
I did not attend the training sessions held before the general sessions just the sessions themselves. I arrived a little early the morning of Wednesday the 28th to register, as the traffic here can be unpredictable.
It was 7:50 when I walked into the lobby of the 2nd floor and already a line for registration had formed. There were perhaps 20 people already waiting ahead of me.
The keynote speaker was Jim Christy, retired special agent of the FBI who was previously Director of the Defense Cyber Crime Center. His talk centered on cyber crime and was very informative. Basically he described the state of cyber crimes and to how cyber crimes have blossomed over the years. The amount of data that needs to be processed over the years has also grown exponentially. He did say that about 42% of cyber crime was centered on child porn, a very disheartening fact I must say.
The requirement for first responders to be certified was really stressed. In the US it is becoming more and more important that this be done so that the evidence recovered is not in question.
My chosen tract on day one was forensics and incident response. The speakers were all first class, very informative and knowledgeable. Though a few of them were marketing products or services, their talks were not focused just on sales. The briefings were designed in such a manner that it was not a sales pitch and not information overload either. I really gained a lot of insight on this subject matter. I really enjoyed many of the speakers and only once felt overwhelmed when one of the sessions dove into CPU internals. But other than that I was comfortable with the level of information provided.
Day one was not without the typical Black Hat controversy. One of the topics was cancelled at the 11th hour. A talk on RFID security was pulled because of some “concerns” from Global HID. This was driven home by the torn pages in the bound session copies. The evening ended with an open bar, finger food that was among the best, lots of conversation, and in general a pleasant time.
I’m told that Black Hat always treats the attendees’ first class and if this was any indication I agree. This afforded us a chance to do some networking and even question the speakers in depth. The vendors were knowledgeable, helpful, and personable. I found them to be very open when discussing other products and not the usual “our product is so much better because…”
Day two was more talented speakers and interesting subject materials. I did not stick to a specific tract on this day. I bounced around listening in on topics that were the most interesting. This was my first pure “security” conference and I am glad that I was able to attend.
After this experience I am hoping that I can attend the USA 2007 Black Hat in Vegas. The knowledge I came away with will only strengthen my skill set and add to the people resources that we all rely on.
I would strongly recommend that if you get the chance to attend a Black Hat conference by all means do so, you won’t be sorry.
Thanks again Clement for this opportunity and for the best darn site around.
Regards, Jim (Side_Winder) "

Please submit using the new on-line system at: https://cfp.blackhat.com/
If you want to submit to the Call for Papers please note Black Hat does not accept product or vendor related pitches, or voodoo. If your talk is a veiled advertisement for a new product or service your company is offering, please do not submit. If your talk relies on voodoo techniques or tools you are not willing to share, then you should rethink the benefit the audience will get from sitting through your presentation. Black Hat is launching its new electronic CFP submissions server with this announcement. You will be able to upload your submissions, make changes, select your co-presenters, etc. This system will allow you to submit multiple presentations as well as be able to change your info should you need to. This new submission and review process will enable the future possibility of peer review and on-line information exchange. For now we are looking forward to seeing your submissions and would like to hear any feedback you have on this new submission process.
Topic Focus for Black Hat DC 2007:
We would like presenters to think about offensive and defensive computer security operations and the application of your expertise and research. Think about its application in an operational process that can be defensive or offense, large enterprise or distributed organized criminal group, military or civilian. This is not a requirement to submit, but we want some differentiation for the DC conference. Thinking in terms of operational applicability will steer content in a direction we hope the DC audience will appreciate.
